MDAL Fall Art Show 11/14-16/08

The Mount Dora Art League Fall Show was held in the Baggage Room at the Chamber of Commerce this year. It did not seem to be a good place for attendance. Had the most traffic Sunday about 45 minutes before we were to close. There were 66 entries......and I was pleasantly surprised to get a ribbon on a small piece called Deeper done in encaustic. At the last minute decided to enter it.

I have had Art hanging in the Eustis Library for 2 months - have to pick it up on Tuesday. Had to decline to hang art in Monster Storage - just too much going on!!

I've got a couple of things going out in my studio - so will work on those. All this art stuff leaves me no time to finish the book I started some time ago.....decisions - decisions.

October Art Stroll Pics

THE MORNING AFTER............

The morning after the Art Stroll in Mount Dora........we were in a good location, good music, wine and hors douvres and plenty of space to display the Art. Now with all that you would think that it would have been a tremendous success.....well, it wasn't! THE AIR CONDITIONING DID NOT WORK!!! As the evening went on, it was cooler outside then inside.....which meant that when the "Art Strolles" came in the entrance door to see the Art - they were hit with such hot air that they quickly went out the Exit door.

I think the ART STROLL is a great way to expose the public to ART in Lake County and I am sure the other locations last night were enjoyed by all. I look forward to participating in the next STROLL ----but in a different location!

My 2 daughters and grandson helped set my stuff up and take it down. Dawn took some pictures and is going to post them for me today........

Well, today is the Eustis Art League meeting - first one of this season...we have a new President and I think the League will experience a "shot in the arm" with her enthusiasm.

I'M BAAAACK...................

O my gosh.................I cannot believe it is already October and I haven't "blogged" since April!! Well, I am baaack for now, so here goes.

Have recoverd from my heart attack in March.......but in May I broke 2 toes.....still have swelling from that.......other than that.....I am back in the swing of things.

Been doing a lot of different art stuff.......mixing several techniques in one piece of work......also did a "wild thing" full of a lot of dimension, and some metal leaves........

The Art Stroll here in Mount Dora is tomorrow and Cassie and Dawn are both going to help me set up ---- that is one of the perks of being "a little old lady" my two daughters are always there to help me. The last Art Stroll I did, I sold one original and one print......be nice if I could do that again. I hope I can get a few more pictures on here in a few days......daughters, do you hear me?

I have let the book I am writing sit on the back burner all summer cause I am having so much fun with this art stuff. I do want to get back to it and get it finished....just so I can say I did it.......it is kinda' racey - but interesting. How many copies shall I save for you?

Will let you know how the Art Stroll goes...........keep your fingers crossed!

WOW and DOUBLE WOW!

The Leesburg Art Show was a great success. It was held the same time as the annual Leesburg City Art Festival. The Festival was held in the city streets and spots were paid for by the art vendors.

The Leesburg Art Show was held in the Center For The Arts building and of course both events were juried (by different judges). Needless to say, artists are nosy critters and always take the time to view other artists works and techniques.

Well, here is where the WOW and DOUBLE WOW comes in ------- I WON THE "PEOPLES CHOICE" ribbon.........that is the one where everyone votes by secret ballot the painting that they like best.......I WON! I still cannot believe it. Oh yes, I also won an Honorable Mention for the painting as well. I prize the Honorable Mention ribbon because I was in the company of some great, well known artists that have been around a long time and have the credentials to prove it.

But most of all I prize the PEOPLES CHOICE because that was the choice of everyone that saw the show (other artists as well).

Enough tooting my own horn now!! Just tried something new,,,,take freezer paper, (you know like you wrap meat in for the freezer) tape it to a hard surface....get liquid acrylic or water color...be sure it is soupy and start putting drops of it on the paper--hold the hard surface up and watch the paint slide down the paper..put another drop (different color) next to the first one and there it goes again...after you have lots of drops and lots of color...draw a straight line across part of the streaks and put drops on that straigt line.....JUST PLAY...it is fun and sometimes you get a stained glass look that is beautiful.

Gotta' go -

ariel

The deadline for entering into the Leesburg Art Assn. Spring show was the
15th....well.....of course it was the 15th when Kathleen reminded me of it. I called Pepper, the show chairman, gave her all my information and check number and she allowed me to enter my new piece "Ariel". It is a poster size 3 layer acrylic. This one is a bit different as I used some bronze in the 3rd application and every now and then you get a little bronze sheen. I took it to the office for Dawn to help me name it and actually one of the other realtors named it Ariel. It seemed to fit so that is what it is called. It is now over at 5th Avenue graphics to be copied..I am having geclee's made of it.......hopefully, I will sell some of them.

Going to work in the studio today, am trying to frame some of the stuff I have already finished.......not 'show' stuff but attractive enough for some one to hang in their home.

LIVE AND LEARN

The piece I was working on (words on a prefinished piece of art) did not turn out well.....won't try that again!! I am entering the new poster size, 3 layer acrylic we named Ariel, the White pictured below and Tempest an encaustic. My sister is entering 3 pieces as well. My grandson Tyler is entering the Student Division with a watercolor. Entering what??? you asked. The Eustis Art Leagues Spring show....it will be judged so hopefully someone in our family will be awarded a ribbon.

Tyler is the son of my daughter who has blog MAEBELLE PARK. Please check her out. My other daughter has MOCKINGBIRD HILL - please check her out as well.

WHITE

Shown below is a picture of me holding my new "White" piece.....as you can see it is a field of white flowers.....so appropriate for spring.. It really came out pretty nice.....when we have time we will probably make notes from it as we did with "He Loves Me He Loves Me Not".

White

entirely new

Finished a little piece that is entirely new to me......words on a previously created background.....I have used previously created backgrounds (such as my new White piece) but I have never used 'words' on it.....I do not letter so this is untested territory.....After painting on the words "lest not your heart be troubled" I then used white wash to sort of diffuse it......Not bad but not good either....

oh well, as they say, back to the drawing board. Abby

exposure

Well, did not sell any of my art - but - had several people in to see it and they professed to like my work.......I was not there most of the time but Dawn talked to them and told them that I had been doing art for only a couple of years.....which surprised most of them. I finished another piece today and already have it framed. It is an unusual painting technique.....you treat the paper first with medium..let it dry and use acrylic paint to paint on a color over the whole sheet..let dry....paint on another coat of paint (different color) use different tools to make designs on the paint - comb, fork, paper towel laid in the wet paint and lifted off, etc....be creative...let dry-- paint another coat of acrylic---spray on alcohol and the paint will bubble.....gives you very unusual looking art....

One of the pictures that I just finished and call "White" was painted on one of the above mentioned papers and is the background for a field of white flowers. I will post a picture on so you can see.

I will probably do some note cards of it. I love to experiment and try new and different things. I think that is what I like about art - it is so forgiving and you can just let go...... More later,

art festival in Mount Dora

FEBRUARY 2nd

Today is the first day of the fabulous Art Festival here in Mount Dora-They expect 250 to 300,000 people to come today and tomorrow. The artists that rent space have to submit slides of their work and it is a juried show. Some great artists will be here......jewelry makers, painters, clothes, sculptors, potters, etc. At the insistence of Dawn, I set up some of my art in the front conference room and she put a sign out front that there was an art show inside.........looks pretty good. But (there is always a 'but')the food vendors are parked in front of our building so I am not certain how many people will make it inside.

I plan to start sorting clothes today - my closets are bulging at the seams! Alot of the stuff will go to a Goodwill store. The next project will be to sort some of my stuff and have a yard sale...in a couple of months.

Gotta' go...........................

Sunday, January 13

Jan.13 - Sunday I am still walking on air after selling an original piece of art and 1 print at the Art Stroll in Mount Dora on Friday night. This was the first time I had participated in a "selling event" - I have only been showing my work in shows with certified judges and have been fortunate enough to win several ribbons. Had Cassie and Dawn not encouraged me I probably never would have tried my hand at art. Now, at this late date and at my age, I feel a new window has opened and I must do my best to excel - now we will see!!

Mount Dora Art Stroll

I wanted to show you my display and give you a chance to see some of my work. We had beautiful weather and lots of people stopped by. I belong to the Mount Dora Art League (along with a couple of other "art organizations") and we all were set up in different areas of the historic downtown for a few hours. My other daughter, Dawn (visit her at Maebelle Park) helped me get ready...selecting, pricing, packing, set-up...and I was so very excited about it all!
Anyway...I am pleased to say that I sold one of my originals...the exact one that is up above! I felt lucky...there was so much wonderful art to choose from!
I am already thinking about the next Art Stroll and getting ready to start working in my studio. I'm moving into something a bit different...working with old jewelry! I'll have one of the girls post pictures when I get it finished ;)
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!
